The Shame of the Muslims that Harmed the Grandson of their Prophet (s)

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

1 November 2014 Fenton Zawiya, Michigan

Zhuhr Suhbah on Ashura

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmani 'r-Raheem.

As-salaamu `alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Alhamdulillahi Rabbi 'l-`Alameen, wa ’s-salaatu wa ’s-salaamu `alaa ashrafi 'l-mursaleena Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammadin wa `alaa aalihi wa sahbihi wa sallim. Alhamdulillahi ‘l-ladhe hadanaa li ‘l-Islam wa ma kunna li-nahtadee law laa an hadaanallah.

Difficult Times When Muslims are Harming Muslims

We are in difficult days, days that we think are too much and we think, “Oh! People are so cruel today”, is it not? And so much killing, about which Prophet (s) said:

يَكُو)

Yakthur al-harju wa’l-marju, and they asked what is harj and marj, and he said "killing and killing and killing!" So now everyone is looking at how bad it is to kill and we know that people today are killing for certain objectives or goals, that they are looking to sit on a chair that is not for them, because one day when they die that chair is going to go away to belong to someone else. And they are fighting for this reason in many places around the world, and how much they are broadcasting around the Internet and on TV about the cruelty of some people today who are killing innocents. I will ask them why they don't look into history, as we have to be fair.

Today an important person has a lot of security to protect him. And if something happened to him the whole world will be worried, and what do you think about what happened in history? Can you imagine a child of an important person could be killed? At least for the sake of his father who is the best in the community or the best in the world, everyone is trying to secure his safety. And they secure him with hundreds and hundreds of people around him. Are we not ashamed as Muslims to do such things? We are ashamed, and we are ashamed more that we are Muslims and harmed other Muslims!

If a Muslim harms a Muslim, all Muslims stand up, and also if a Muslim harms a non-Muslim, also everyone stands up against that action, because we are Ummatan Wasatan, the Ummah of the middle way, we don't practice violence. I cannot imagine something, but I can imagine something else. I can imagine that someone for a certain reason will kill someone and they put him in jail. But I cannot imagine The Most Perfect Human Being (s) Allah created among all Heavens and Earth, and all Creation is adorned with his beautiful Light, about which Allah said in Holy Qur'an:

وإعلموا أن فيكم رسول الله

W`alamoo anna feekum rasoolullaah.

And know Allah's Messenger is in you. (Surat al-Hujuraat, 49:7)

Not One Drop of Sayyidina Husayn’s Blood was Shed in Vain!

His Light adorns all humanity, and some irresponsible, jealous, envious ones took revenge from his grandson. Where is adab? Today we are suffering here and there, that they killed certain people for certain reasons. Okay, we might understand, but with an army of 10,000 they killed Sayyidina Husayn (a), the grandson of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), with his family, wives, and children in cold blood on 10th Muharram (which we are observing on Monday inshaa-Allah).

Sayyidina Husayn (a) came unarmed with 72 people to sacrifice himself for the benefit of the Ummah of Muhammad (s)! People told him, “Don't go there,” but he said, “I received a lot of letters requesting me to come (to Iraq) and they will support me.” However, they supported the one against him! You gave your promise to support him!

He came innocently to see them because he promised them, and he fulfils his promises. They called him to Kufa and Baghdad, and then what happened? He is the Lion of Allah, the one who says, “Yaa Allah!” and Allah says, “Yaa `Abdee!” and if he says, “Yaa Rasoolullah, yaa Jiddee!” his grandfather (s) will say, “What do you need, my grandson?” He is the one who with one arm can remove all the people on the right side and with the other arm remove all the people on the left side! But he didn’t do that because he wants the Ummah to understand that cruelty is not allowed in our religion.

He said to those who petitioned him, “I am coming to you with an open heart.” He came towards Baghdad to meet with the people and they responded with hasad, envy and jealousy. For what? For the chair! They said, “No, we don't want you, we will fight you!” Then when they met for negotiation, Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) said, “I will go back, I will go to Damascus, let me go with my family.” But they did not want that because they were preparing that massacre and bloodshed.

Heavenly Support in Battle

Every drop of his blood they shed is cursing them, and every drop of his blood was praising Sayyidina al-Husayn (a)! If he wants, with one arm he can wipe out the ones who are on the right side with one movement, like at the Battle of Badr when Allah supported them with a thousand angels with heavenly swords and when they moved their swords all the enemies fell down dead with a black mark on their necks! Just as when Sayyidina al-Mahdi (a) comes, he will fight not with a sword nor any weapons: when he says “Allahu Akbar!” all these big weapons will melt, because justice is coming. It will be as if all these dunya weapons don’t exist and with Allah's showing Heavenly Power the Earth will absorb these weapons and they will disappear!

With his whip, not even the sword, he will whip right or left and reach anyone who is against peace and harmony, who is against what Allah has ordered for Earth to be a peaceful Earth. They will go and only good people will stay. So when he says “Allahu Akbar,” Mahdi (a) is not going to fight everyone with a sword, no! Grandshaykh `AbdAllah al-Fa'iz ad-Daghestani (q) said that by him moving one arm, all those on the right will fall down with a black Heavenly Sign on their necks (as if struck by a weapon).

Today, I don't want to say it, but Allah is showing us what the Prophet (s) said about this in a hadith, when the Prophet (s) was fighting and whipping the unbelievers and they were 1000 and Sahaabah (r) were 313, showing them His Greatness, showing that line. Today in Hollywood you see them fighting with swords made of light and that is not imagined, it was thrown in their minds and hearts. Those Hollywood swords are like plastic ones compared to the original ones in the time of Sayyidina al-Mahdi (a)!

His Blood Was Not Shed In Vain

The blood of Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) was not shed in vain! Everyone in that war is going to be judged. Ummat an-Nabi (s) is always going to Paradise, but those who harmed Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) are going to be judged. What did Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) say to them when they refused to give his children water? What happened when they came to kill him?

He said, “O Earth and O Heavens! You are not going to see anyone like me again.” Heaven and Earth wept for him and the sky wept for him, and from all over Earth no one is able to see the children of Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) and grandchildren of Sayyidina al-Husayn. He said this to the head of the army who did not want to fight him, but then that one, Shimr, threw the spear and the battle began.

Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) possessed al-`afuw `inda al-maqdira, to forgive when you are able to take revenge. “The forgiveness is in that station of being in power. My grandfather is Sayyidina Muhammad (s), the Best of Humanity. How are you going to stand in his presence on Judgment Day and you are killing his grandson? What are you going to say about killing his two grandsons?” although Sayyidina al-Hasan (a) was not killed in that battle but, nevertheless, they killed him. “What answer do you have? No answer, but you know my grandfather, Allah gave him the power:

فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَه ُُ وَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَ

Fa man ya`mal mithqaala dharratin khayran yarah, wa man ya`mal mithqaala dharratin sharran yarah.

Whosoever has done an atom's weight of good shall see it, and whosoever has done an atom's weight of evil shall see it. (Surat al-Zalzalah, 99:7-8)

“Those who are judged go to Paradise and those others go to Hellfire, and everyone is in need of the shafa`ah of Rasoolullah (s)! So what are you (all 10,000 that killed Sayyidina al-Husayn) going to say to him? He has the power to throw you in Hellfire by Allah’s Order! Do you think that he will recompense you or punish you? But he (s) is not like you, so he will intercede for you. Although he is able to throw you in Hellfire, he will save you on Judgment Day and now you are killing his grandson!”

They killed Sayyidina al-Husayn (a), completely beheaded him and cut him into pieces, and they took his head and presented it as a gift to the one whose name we don't mention, who was running the government at that time. It is said that Heavens were weeping and drops of rain became yellow and all kinds of difficulties came on them after they killed Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) and his family. What did they benefit from that? Nothing! Even to seek the chair is risky; don't sit on a chair (seat of power) as it is too much headache and you cannot please everyone; still people will be cursing you as you cannot please everyone and you might make a mistake, so run away from it as you don't need it.

As awliyaullah say, Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) sacrificed himself for the Ummah of the Prophet (s)! Every drop of his blood that was shed was saying, “Muhammad, Muhammad, Muhammad.” His love for his grandfather (s) cannot be explained and his grandfather’s love for him cannot be explained! When they cut his head, which they say is in Karbala or Egypt or previously in Sham, in different places, that head was raised up by angels to the highest level of Barzakh, that Heavenly abode between dunya and Akhirah, and it was replaced by a copy.

O Muslims! Every Muslim must observe the Day of Ashura because it is adab with Rasoolullah (s), who said:

أدبني ربي فأحسن تأديبي

Adabanee rabbee fa’ahsana taa'deebee.

My Lord perfected my good manners and conduct. (Ibn `Asakir)

Although he is already of good character, when we say Adabanee rabbee fa’ahsana taa'deebee, “Allah perfected my character,” does the Prophet (s) have imperfect character? No, so it really means, “Allah dressed me from the Light and Manifestation of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes,” which is to say that Allah (swt) ja`alanee rabbaaniyyan, made him lordly:

يا عبدي اطعني اجعلك ربانيا تقول لشي كن فيكون

Yaa `abdee ati`anee aj`aluka rabbaaniyyan taqoolu li shayyin kun fayakoon.

O My servant! Obey Me and I will make you lordly; (if) you say to a thing “Be!” it will be (come into existence).

This means, “O My servant! Obey me and I will make you lordly; belong to Me, then when you say to something ‘Be!’ it will be.” Prophet (s) is the only one with perfect and complete submission. His Sahaabah, his Awliya, Siddiqs, Shuhada, Khalifs, the sincere and pious ones in the Ummah, all have been dressed by Allah, but not like the Prophet (s): Allah gave them perfection, but not like the Prophet (s) as they still need to go higher and higher. So it is adab at least to remember that day, and I am speaking to Ahlu ’s-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama`ah; if others don't want to observe that day we understand what they want, but we Ahlu ’s-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama`ah must observe that day and also recite the seerah of Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) to teach our children about that story, because it teaches us how to be perfect. And we fast on that day as the Prophet (s) mentioned two hadiths about it.

Ibn `Abbas (r) reported that the Prophet (s) arrived in Madina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of `Ashoora. The Prophet (s) said to them: “What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it?” They said: “It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it.” Upon this the Messenger of Allah (s) said: “We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have.” So Allah's Messenger (s) observed fast (on the day of `Ashoora), and gave orders that it should be observed. (Muslim)

Also that day was fasted before Ramadan was ordered and it was an obligatory fast, they then stopped fasting on `Ashoora after Ramadan fasts were made obligatory. Not only do we fast in honor of Sayyidina Musa (a), we have to observe that day in honor of Sayyidina al-Husayn (a). Also on that day, Allah forgave Sayyidina Adam (a), and on that day Allah saved Sayyidina Nuh (a) from the flood, and saved Sayyidina Ibrahim (a) from the fire of Nimrood, and on that day Allah saved Sayyidina Musa (a) from Pharaoh, on that day Allah saved Sayyidina `Isa (a) by raising him up, and on that day Allah dressed the Prophet (s) with many, many dresses and manifestations on him completely. So we, as Ahlu ’s-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama`ah, must observe the story of Sayyidina Husayn (a).

That is not only a Shi`a concept, but it is an Ahlu ’s-Sunnah concept to observe and learn from him, that he took 70 people with him to be massacred into pieces in order for the whole Ummah to be saved; not like what is happening in Middle Eastern countries now, killing for no reason or only killing for chair. No one can bring back peace to Earth except by Allah's order and Prophet's (s) order, as he (s) mentioned in a hadith of the Last Days, that Mahdi will come with peace and justice and balance.

The Mahdi will be of my stock and will have a broad forehead, a prominent nose. He will fill the Earth will equity and justice as it was filled with oppression and tyranny, and he will rule for seven years.

(Narrated Abu Sa`eed Al-Khudri, Abu Dawud)

Yamla al-arda qistan wa `adlan, “Justice between Muslim and non-Muslim” and between everyone, not war, not using machine guns and beheading people as that is not Islam. It is not mentioned in any hadith that he will bring the countries with rockets and cannons and fire, no; when any hadith is mentioned about Mahdi (a) it mentions peace. When he says “Allahu Akbar” that means peace, as Allah is Greater than everything! By this word all the weapons will melt. May Allah (swt) teach us adab.

Grandshaykh (q) said in forty day seclusion, wasiyyatullah li ’l-habeeb laa tansa al-adab, the advice of Allah to the Prophet (s) is, “Don't forget adab.” That is why the Prophet (s) wants to teach the Ummah good adab and that is for the Ummah, to keep advising them, as the Prophet (s) was already perfected in his adab, adaabanee rabbee! That is why he said to Abu Hurayrah (r):

أوصى النبي صلى اللّه عليه وسلم أبا هريرة بوصية عظيمة فقال: { يا أبا هريرة! عليك بحسن الخلق }. قال أبو هريرة رضي اللّه عنه: وما حسن الخلق يا رسول اللّه؟قال: { تصل مَنْ قطعك، وتعفو عمن ظلمك، وتُعطي من حرمك}

The Prophet (s) advised Abu Hurayrah, “O Abaa Hurayrah! You must have good manners.” Abu Hurayrah asked, “What is good manners, O Rasoolullah (s)?” He (s) said, “Connect with the one who cut you off; forgive the one who oppressed you and give to the one who prevented you from reaching your desires.” (Al-Bayhaqi)

It is not good manners to cut innocent people's heads and that mistake is not only on them (executioners), but that mistake is on every leader in this world that let this misery continue like that, as the Prophet (s) mentioned in hadith, and his hadith predicted all issues of today, and one of them is:

أبشروا بالمهدي رجل من قريش من عترتي يخرج في اختلاف من الناس وزلزال فيملأ الأرض قسطا وعدلا كما ملئت ظلما وجور...

Good tidings of al-Mahdi, a man from the Quraysh from my descendants, who will appear during a (time of) great dissension between the people and earthquakes, and he will fill the Earth with justice and fairness as much as it had been filled with harm and oppression. (al-Haakim)

May Allah (swt) show us those days. And now we will read a special Surat al-Fatihah for Sayyidina al-Husayn (a) and those who died with him and for all the Family of the Prophet (s), the Ahlu ‘l-Bayt (a). Al-Fatihah.

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
