Allah Wants Us to Love Him Exclusively

Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasoolullah. O you who believe! Verily Allah is with those who fear Allah and perfect their character.

O Believers, Mu’minoon! Alhamdulillah that Allah (swt) made us from Ummat an-Nabi (s). Allah (swt) is laa shareeka lahu, without any partner. He tested His anbiya and awliya to check their hearts, to see if there was anyone else living in it. Allah (swt) tested many of them and we bring an example today about Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a), to whom He gave twelve children, and the loveliest one to him from amongst them was Sayyidina Yusuf (a), whom Allah created as the most beautiful. Tajalli al-Jamaal, the tajalli of beauty, was bestowed upon him and no one could take their eyes away from him! That is why Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) was unable to take his eyes away from Sayyidina Yusuf (a); he always wanted to look at this beautiful human being that Allah created from His Beauty, which made him unable to look at anyone else.

There was no one more beautiful in this world than Sayyidina Yusuf, who represented beauty on Earth. Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) loved him more than his wife and all his other children, which is why he kept Sayyidina Yusuf (a) with him and didn't let him be away from his presence for even one moment.

People today always look at their children lovingly, and if they meet someone important, they say, “This is my child,” which means everyone wants their child to be the best and loved in the best way. When you love something so much, you cannot leave it. Then Allah will test you, and send a difficulty on you. If I love dunya so much, I will hold dunya like I constantly grasp my tasbeeh. If you hit my hand on the top, can you get it out? It will fall immediately! If you love dunya this way, then you hold it with all your power. Allah doesn't like anyone to hold anything from dunya, but as we cannot leave it, we want to hold on to it. Allah doesn't want us to love dunya, or even to love of our children more than we love of Allah (swt) and His Prophet (s)!

What did Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) do that Allah took his son away from him? He didn't take dunya from him as he was a prophet and, therefore, he didn’t care for dunya. Allah could have tested him by taking something else, like his house, but Allah tested him by taking away his most lovely child and prevented him from seeing that child for 35 years! Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) cried for Sayyidina Yusuf (a) for 35 years, and Allah let him cry and didn't return his son. Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) and Sayyidina Yusuf (a) were both prophets, and yet Allah separated them. So we can say Allah sends tests on His prophets to know if they can be patient or not.

Can Allah not make all this dunya Muslim? Then why did Allah (swt) make too many religious backgrounds? If He wants, in one second He can make all human beings Muslims and they will say, “Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illa-Llah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasooluh.” But why is Allah (swt) not doing that? He wants to teach us the difficult way, that there is no Creator except Him, that He is “al-Yuhiyy wa Yumeet”, The One Who Makes Life and Death! He is the One Who provides for you! You cannot provide anything for yourself except what He gives.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ

Inn’Allah Huwa ar-Razzaq.

Veril,y Allah is the Provider! (Az-Zariyat, 51:58)

The real `ibaadah is to put your forehead down on the ground and say, “Yaa Rabbee! You are the One for Whom sajda is, no one else!” So `ibaadah is sajda: He didn't create human beings and jinns except to be in sajda. Allah doesn’t need anyone to provide for Him; all He wants from us is `ibaadah and He will provide to them.

Wa maa khalaqtu‘l-jinna wal-insa illa li- y`abudoom maa ureedoo minhum min rizqin wa maa ureedoo an yut`imoon.

I have only created jinn and men so that they may worship Me. No sustenance do I require of them, nor do I require that they should feed Me. (adh-Dhariyat, 51:56-57)

When you make sajda, you cannot put anyone other than Allah (swt) in your heart; it means all your love is for Allah, no one else, because if you love anyone with Allah you are making shirk. Your love must be exclusively for Allah (swt)! In his heart, Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) also loved Yusuf (a) along with his love of Allah (swt), then Allah took his son away for 35 years to teach him he must empty all love in his heart except love for Him alone and not to put shirk there.

At the end he said to his sons, “Go and search for Yusuf!” because he still had hope. This was the last year of his 35-year test. He had cried so much that he became blind. The sign of blindness is that you cannot see; everything is a blackout! When he became blind from dunya, Allah let Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) find his son, as he could only see Akhirah and Allah’s signs in this world. Only then Allah brought his son back to him, while before, he put his son with Allah in his heart. However, Allah is “al-Ghayoor,” jealous! He doesn't want anyone in the heart of the servant except Him!

When Ya`qoob became blind, it meant that dunya was gone for him. When dunya is gone, then Allah's signs will appear to you and you will begin to see what people cannot see and hear what people cannot hear. That is when Allah brought Sayyidina Yusuf (a) back to him.

There are two kinds of speeches: a normal teaching from a speaker, and awliya's speech. When they speak, they use the tajalli of the story they are mentioning and take away from your heart whatever they spoke about. Grandshaykh and Mawlana Shaykh (q) said many times that when they relate any story or advice, they dress us with whatever they say. We are speaking about not being in love with dunya, so they use that power and take the love of dunya from our hearts! Although people are sleeping and even snoring, still they are receiving this tajalli and Allah will take the love of dunya from their hearts!

Imagine! Allah tested Sayyidina Ya`qoob (a) and it took 35 years for him to take the love of Sayyidina Yusuf (a) away from his heart. What do you think about us? It needs from the beginning of the world to its end to take that out from us! Look at Sayyidina Muhammad (s): Allah (swt) did not let even one of his male children live. He took all of his boys and left only the girls! So what is our duty? It is to say, “Alhamdulillah wash-shukru lillah!” Allah said, “I don't want you to run for your rizq, I send your rizq to you,” and now, Allah made our host prepare our rizq!

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
