The Immense Heart That Carried

the Divine Revelation of Holy Qur’an

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

Jumu`ah Khutbah at St. Ann’s Priory

Alhamdulillah, Who has honored us with Ramadan and with the Holy Qur’an! I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, with no partner, and I bear witness that Sayyidina Muhammad (s) is His Messenger. … And may Allah be pleased with the Sahaaba of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), especially Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) and Sayyidina `Umar (r), Sayyidina `Uthman (r) and Sayyidina `Ali (r).

O Believers! Allah has granted us a grant for which we can never thank Him enough. In the time of Sayyidina Musa (a), there was a man who never came out from his cave. It was Sayyidina Musa’s habit, as was the habit of other prophets, to go on journeys to the mountains, not like us today, who only sit on our chickens and eggs, preferring only to be with our children and wives and homes. they went fee sabeelillah, in the Way of Allah, to guide others to Islam! Islam is waiting for everyone to hold flag of the Prophet (s) and give their lives for Islam. If no one is going forth, Islam will never be spread. The Sahaabah (r) went to China and throughout Asia; they didn't say, “We must stay with our wives and children,” although they have rights, but more right is to spread Allah's Message.

“And he heard the voice of a man in the cave;” listen carefully to know what Allah has given us. He looked inside the cave and saw man in sajda, which is sign of `Uboodiyya, the Station of Servanthood. If you do good deeds day and night but not doing sajda, you are not considered a servant of Allah, but rather a servant of Shaytan! He saw that man in continuous sajda, reciting, “Praise be to Allah, Who has favored me over many, many people with a great favor!” And that was his tasbeeh, praising Allah that he has been give so much favors that he cannot count them. Can we count the favors that Allah gave us? He saw what Allah gave him was the best. He felt the presence of Sayyidina Musa (a), came up from sajda and sat on his back. Sayyidina Musa (a) thought, “Is this a man or half a man?” as he didn't have any legs or arms, only a torso!

Sayyidina Musa (a) said, “How do you eat with no legs and no arms?”

That man said, “Don't rush, wait.”

Sayyidina Musa (a) waited and saw a deer approach, and she opened her legs and that man drank her milk! That was his food in 24 hours, and he was continuously saying, “Glory be to Allah, Who favored me over many other creation.”

Sayyidina Musa (a) said, “How are you favored, when you have no legs, only a torso and head?”

He said, “I have been favored that Allah made me to be Muslim!” He glorified Allah (swt) for making him a Muslim and he did not complain that he has no arms and legs. Today Allah has given us everything, but we are not thanking Him! When our leaders are going good we are good, and when they are bad we are bad, so we are in the Signs of the Last Days, when all are bad! Don't complain to me; yes, we are not doing what must be done!

Abu Hurayra (r) related from the Prophet (s), “When your leaders are the best of you and your rich are your best ones, generous for you, giving to you, and your decisions are according to consultation between each other...” That means any decision you want to make, don't be stubborn on your opinion. We are like a horse wearing blinders and cannot see except straight. There are other elements you don't know, so don't be stubborn on your opinion. “Then at that time, when your leaders are good and rich ones are generous and you consult in your affairs, then your life above earth is better than below. But when your leaders are the worst ones, and the rich ones are stingy and don't give fee sabeelillah, and orders in your affairs come from your wives....” If there any man here whose orders don't come from his wife, raise his hand!

We are not going to say from where, from one Arab country, a princess whose father is one of the richest men in the world is not happy; she has lots of problems and wants to kill herself. A princess whose father is one of the biggest leaders in the Muslim world is not happy, so what is the benefit of having a lot of money if someone you love is not happy? In that case, it’s better to eat rice and bread and live for Allah’s Sake, a life of `uboodiyya!

I go to Indonesia many times a year and have seen people there living up on the mountains. They live for as long as 100 to 120 years! They eat once every 24 hours, just some rice inside banana leaves. They don't spend all their money on eating things like kabobs!

Related from Sayyidina Hasan (r), the Prophet (s) said:

Innakum fee zamaan man taraka ushraka wa umara bi halaq...

You happen to be in such a time that if anyone of you leaves even one-tenth of what you have been ordered to do, he will be ruined. Then will come such a time that if anyone accomplishes even one-tenth of what the people have been ordered to do, he will be absolved. (Tirmizi Sharif, Kitaab al-Fitaan)

The Prophet (s) addressed the Sahaabah (r ) and told them that if they leave even one-tenth of their `uboodiyya, servanthood, ordered from makaarim al-akhlaaq, the best of good manners, from the Five Pillars of Islam and Six Pillars of Imaan and one Pillar of Ihsaan, if you leave one-tenth of these, which takes all your time, you will be destroyed and you will lose Allah's rahmah on you: you will be punished! But there will be coming a time when “Later, We are going to show them Our Signs in horizons.”

There is news in the horizons about the coming of such people at the end of time, who will perform only one-tenth of their `uboodiyya, yet they will be saved! Look at the Rahmatullah for us! Whoever performs even one-tenth of what the Prophet (s) brought, will be successful and safe! Look at the immense Mercy of Allah (swt)! If we thank Allah (swt), He will give us more. Don't be like leaders today who do their worst to people, rather look at the leaders of old times, like Sayyidina `Umar (r), Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (r) and the Sahaabah (r) who gave their lives for the Prophet (s)! We are not asking you to go and fight, but instead, perform your `uboodiyya and destroy the fitna that grows between people.

Allah (swt) said:

Yaa ayyuha ’Lladheena aamanoo in ja’akum faasiqun bi naba'in fa-tabayyinoo an tuseeboo qawman bi-jahaalatin fatusbihoo `alaa maa fa`ltum naadimeen.

O you who believe! If a corrupt person comes to you with something wrong, ascertain the truth, unless you harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become full of repentance for what you have done. (Surat al-Hujaraat, 49:6)

Allah (swt) is addressing those who believe: not just Muslims, but those who are mu’min. Being a mu’min is higher than being a Muslim and not every Muslim is necessarily a mu’min. Allah (swt) told us not say that we are mu’min until imaan enters our hearts.

Also, Allah (swt) orders us that if someone comes to you with a matter, a tale or news, check it first and if it is not correct, drop it, but if it is correct, speak with the one who brought it to solve the problem. It is our responsibility to check, unless we want to say, “May Allah (swt) forgive me and I still love that one, I don't care what people say!”

This is the reality of Islam. The Prophet (s) said that if we do only one-tenth of what we are ordered, we will be saved! Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (r), a famous Sahaabi, said, “There will not come one year that the year to follow it will not be worse!” As we approach the Last Days, the year that is coming will be worse than the one we are in now. Also, Sayyidina 'Umar (r) used to say, “If today is not better for me than yesterday, then it is better to be under the ground than above it!” It means he wanted his days to be better and better.

Sayyidina Anas bin Malik (r ) heard the Prophet (s) say:

There will not be one day, one night, one month and not one year which will be better than the one before it. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Each one will be less than the one before it.

Abi Hurayrah (r) related that the Prophet (s) said:

لا تقوم الساعة حتى يتسافد في الطريق تسافد الحمير

Laa taqoom as-sa`at hatta yatasaafadu fi ‘t-tareeq tasaafadu 'l-hameer.

The Hour will not come until there are men and women in the streets having sexual relations with each other like donkeys. (Ibn Habban, Kitaab al-Fitan [Chapter of Tribulations])

Today they teach how a man and woman should sleep with each other! When girls become 12 or 13 years of age, they are given pills so they won't become pregnant. Is this happening here or not? What kind of knowledge are you getting from schools? Girls and boys are losing their dignity and honor. They continue in such problems until they are 25 or 26 years old, until they get a Masters or a PhD! So many parents request that we pray for their child to pass exams, but do they ever request a prayer for their child for the Day of Judgment or to have good `amal for Akhirah? No! They want prayers only for the child’s exams or for this or that of dunya, nothing related to Akhirah!

The Sahaabah (r) asked the Prophet (s) whether the lifting of knowledge meant that the Holy Qur'an will be lifted from the hands of people, and he explained it was not so, but it means the scholars and awliyaullah will die and leave no equal substitutes behind; no one will replace those who die. The year that will come will be worse than the one that passed, so those who came before will be much better than those who will follow.

This is why you cannot see any real `ulama or awliyaullah today. If I ask someone here to mention one wali, they will say, “We don't know any, we know only our shaykh.” Yes, you know your shaykh, but can you mention any other? There are 124,000 awliyaullah at any given time. In old times, people used to mention their names one after the other, hundreds of them! They are always living among the ummah. Does this mean Allah (swt) will not keep that? There is a hierarchy and even those at the first level are part of it. The top of the pyramid is in need for the bottom just as mush as the bottom is in need for the top. This is an engineering principle: if your structure is not strong, the top will fall over. Therefore, the one at the top is in need of the one at the bottom and vice versa. So, don't humiliate any awliyaullah!

Sayyidina Azra`eel (a) takes peoples’ souls and according to hadith, knowledge will be pulled out from people. We see what they are teaching today, only “alif ,” “ba,” “ta” and “jeem.” No one teaches what Grandshaykh (q) and Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (q) used to teach, or the Heavenly Knowledge that Sayyidina Khidr (a) taught Sayyidina Musa (a). May Allah (swt) make the two oceans--the outer and inner--merge! There is no more baatin; awliyaullah are hidden.

Another sign is that there will be too many earthquakes. Now we hear of tsunamis whereas before, in my whole life, I never heard of a tsunami but now every child knows what it is. When Allah (swt) shakes the earth there is nowhere to run! Look at Japan and Indonesia. Run now, but to where? Run to Allah (swt)! Allah (swt) did not say to run to any other thing, He said, “Run to Allah!”

Time will also pass quickly and it will collapse until there will be no time. This is why during travelling we have jetlag. There is a twelve hours difference between Indonesia and America; night in Indonesia is daytime in America. How did the Prophet (s) say this 1400 year ago? No one knew about it then, yet the Prophet (s) mentioned it.

There will also be too much fitna coming out. Do you want a bigger fitna now than smart phones? People even carry them to the masjid and also text from there. What to do? They text while driving, turning the steering wheel with their legs and text message with their hands!

Before people watched TV and now they use smart phones. Can you control what your children are watching on it? Most children have iPhones yet their fathers don’t! They say schools require students to have it or at least a computer. Why is that? Because by pressing one key, you go to something that is against Islam!

There will also be too much killing, as we see now. The best of lands after Mecca and Madinah is Sham. What is happening there? According to numbers quoted in the mdeia, twenty-thousand people have been killed, but in reality it is hundreds of thousands! This is the place where Fadaa’il ash-Shaam was mentioned by the Prophet (s).

May Allah (swt) forgive us. Allah (swt) is not punishing us due to the barakah and mercy of the Prophet (s).

They are passing a box (for charity), so give more as this is Ramadan so don't think it is humiliating to give, be generous!

Wa min Allahi 't-tawfeeq, bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
