Leaving Dunya Brings You to Akhira in This Life

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

8 November 2012 Lefke, Cyprus

Zhuhr Suhbah

A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani 'r-rajeem. Bismillahi 'r-Rahmaani 'r-Raheem.

Nawaytu 'l-arba`een, nawaytu 'l-`itikaaf, nawaytu 'l-khalwah, nawaytu 'l-`uzlah,

nawaytu 'r-riyaadah, nawaytu 's-sulook, lillahi ta`alaa fee haadha 'l-masjid.

Atee`oollaha wa atee`oo 'r-Rasoola wa ooli 'l-amri minkum.

Obey Allah, obey the Prophet, and obey those in authority among you. (Surat an-Nisa, 4:59)

What Allah (swt) sends every day is always different and more than what He sent the previous day, every day He manifests more on His Servants for the sake of His Prophet (s). Sayyidina `Umar (r) said, “If tomorrow is not better than today, then it is better to die.” It means as Prophet (s) is continuously in ascension, Mi`raj, he is always moving nearer to the Divine Presence, to Qaaba Qawsayni aw Adnaa, although he left dunya, his ascension is never-ending, and as he is in ascension, he is taking his ummah with him. So what is sent on us tomorrow is not only better, it is also more and different; tomorrow you will get more than what you got today, and today is more than what you got yesterday. The ummah is always increasing. And the barakah of Sayyidina Muhammad (s), awliyaullah and Rahmatullah, Allah's Mercy, is always increasing and not decreasing.

As we mentioned previously, we have taken the hand of awliyaullah and they have given us baya`, so in fact we have pledged, “O my shaykh, I like you to guide me!” and when the shaykh says, “Yes,” by extending his hand he becomes responsible. Subhaan-Allah, this is so astonishing! I have mentioned it many times that in the time of Grandshaykh (q), very few shaykhs gave baya` to their followers, as then they did not give it so readily. Grandshaykh (q), who is inheriting and carrying secrets from all awliyaullah and from Prophet (s), gave baya` to just two mureeds and was often heard saying, “I have only two mureeds, Nazim Effendi and Husayn Effendi.”

But today, for the sake of the Rahmah covering the Earth and for the sake of Prophet (s), Mawlana Shaykh Nazim gives baya` to everyone, even in large groups. I have often experienced this with Mawlana when he traveled to different countries: they give baya` in huge numbers, to ten thousand or more. In Sri Lanka, they would throw a thread about 500 metres long and everyone holds one end of the thread and Mawlana would hold the other, and that way everyone took baya` and there were thousands on that thread! In Indonesia, sometimes there were thirty or forty-thousand people, who all raised their hands and he gave baya` to everyone. What is the significance? It is to make sure that as we approach the End of Time, to get as many people as possible under their responsibility. Before this, awliyaullah did not want to take that responsibility as it is very heavy. For this reason, I do not like to pray as imaam and lead the prayer. I request someone else to lead, as the imaam carries the responsibility for the ones praying behind him. Awliyaullah carry the responsibility of those mureeds to whom they give baya` on their shoulders!

The shaykh is not expecting you to do the awraad every day, we know that, and he will carry that responsibility and do that for his mureeds. We are not explaining this for scholars as some don’t understand, but later we can explain how it works. But is is important to understand that here we believe the shaykh carries the responsibility of his mureeds and presents them to Prophet (s) clean! Awliyaullah want us to clean our outside and they will clean our inside; don’t expect your shaykh to clean your outside. As the shaykh cleans you more and more from the inside, your features begin to resemble your shaykh. If you observe other mureeds, as the shaykh fixes the inside their features change for the better. That is why the Prophet (s) said:

المؤمن مرآة أخيه

Al-mu’min mi'rraat akheehi.

The believer is the mirror of his brother (or sister).

The shaykh is the mu’min who puts you in his mirror and when he does, you begin to reflect his character. I will explain this with a hadith.

Sayyidina Anas (r) relates that the Prophet (s) came upon the youthful companion Harith (r) of the Ansaar, and asked, Kayfa asbahta? “How are you today, how did your morning begin?” He said, Yaa Rasoolullah, asbahtu mu’minan haqqan, “O Prophet of Allah! I woke up today as a true mu’min. (This is how I felt myself today.) And the Prophet (s) said, Anzhuru maa taqoolu fa inna li kulli qawlin haqiqat, “For every saying there is a reality; therefore, you must explain this and you cannot only say, ‘I woke up as a mu’min.’ What is the proof that you became mu’min this morning?” (Prophet (s) is saying this to him because he wants to spread that teaching.) He said, Azafta `an ad-dunya, “I dropped this dunya from my life; I dropped everything that relates to this world, everything!”

Sayyidina `Ali (r) and Sayyidatina Fatima az-Zahra (r) had only one full-length dress between them that they could wear for prayer, and since at that time ladies did not go to the mosque for prayer, they took turns wearing the dress; Sayyida Fatima (r) prayed in it first, then Sayyidina `Ali (r) wore it for prayer to the mosque. It was only worn during prayer, not as we do today. So once Sayyidina `Ali (r) was late to Salaat al-Fajr and Prophet (s) asked him why he was late. Sayyidina `Ali (r) said, “Yaa Rasoolullah, we have only one dress and Sayyida Fatima (r) was wearing it for her prayer.” Look how much they left dunya from their hearts!

Look, I am wearing these same clothes for many days, but had a special dress for prayers or (some people) for dhikr and reading Holy Qur’an, which they use only for that purpose.

So Sayyidina Harith (r) said, “I left dunya, I took it from me. I didn’t want anything but you and now I have nothing but you.”

Prophet (s) asked, “How did you leave dunya? What what did you do?” because someone can say, “I left dunya and I stay in Mawlana's holy masjid,” but Sayyidina Harith (r) did not say, “I left dunya to live in the Holy Mosque of Madinah.”

It is not only by tongue but by action, so what was your action? What did you do to leave your dunya? Did you drop your cars, money, property and all that you have of worldly possessions? What did Harith (r) drop?

Sayyidina Harith (r) said, “I made myself thirsty during the day,” which means he was fasting the whole year except the five days of `Eid and all the other days he was fasting. Azhmaatu nahaaree, “I made my day thirsty,” and you know how hot Madinatu 'l-Munawwara is and there you need to drink, but he did not to impose hardship on himself.

SubhaanAllah. Look at us today, how Allah (swt) is giving us mercy: we are eating, drinking, we have cars, money, and everything and it is accepted! Recently I spoke about the hadith of Prophet (s), when he said to the Sahaabah, “If you neglect to do ten percent of the Shari`ah obligations I gave you but you complete ninety percent, still you will be asked why you left the ten percent! But there are people coming in the Last Days, who will complete ten percent of their obligations and leave ninety percent, and they will enter Paradise.” We are in this era now and most descriptions the Prophet (s) mentioned in ahadeeth about the Last Days have already occurred.

So Sayyidina Harith (r) said, Azhmaatu nahaaree, “I made my day very thirsty and very hungry and I didn’t care,” fa ashartu layaalee, “and I made my night awake, I didn’t sleep; most of the night I am absorbed in `ibaadah.” So during the day there was no drinking or eating, and during the night no sleep. He was as Allah (swt) revealed in a hadith to Prophet (s):

أَنَا جَلِيْسُ مَنْ ذَكَرَنِي

Anaa jaleesu man dhakaranee.

I sit with him who remembers Me. (Ahmad, Bayhaqi)

Allah (swt) is saying, “I am with the one who mentioned Me.” If you want to explain it literally, “anajaleesu man dhakaranee” means, “I am sitting with the one who is remembering Me.” It means sitting directly to your left or your right, and His Presence will be with you! “Jalees” is literally “to sit with someone or accompany him,” but it’s real meaning is, “I am sending My Rahmah and Manifestations of My Beautiful Names to that person.” That is for those whom stay awake all night, like al-Harith al-Ansariyy (r). Azhartu layli, “I kept myself awake all night.”

What was he doing? Dhikrullah, reading Holy Qur’an, reading hadith, saying Laa ilaaha illa-Llah or whatever else. Who is doing that today? There are a few. For the last fifty years, I never saw Mawlana Shaykh, may Allah give him long life, sleep more than one or two hours a night and the rest he is awake. I don’t want to say a bad word, but we are sleeping day and night and we have nothing else to do! Is this correct or not?

When Prophet (s) was asked what is the proof, he said, “I made my day thirsty and I was awake all night.” This is the real meditation that we will discuss in the next few days, the real muraqabah. And what did he say to the Prophet (s) after that? It means, “I have prepared myself: during the day I am thirsty, during the night I am awake.” It is like what Prophet (s) said to the Sahaabah, “We have finished with the small jihad and are now coming to the big jihad.”

Raj`ana min al-jihaadu 'l-asghar ila 'l-jihaadu 'l-akbar.

We returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.

We have moved from the small jihad, where you fight and may be killed on the battlefield, becoming shaheed. Although this is of the struggle, yet it is the smallest jihad Prophet (s) mentions. The biggest jihad is Jihad an-Nafs, to struggle against your ego. Let us all ask ourselves, are we struggling with our ego? I can say yes for all of you because, mashaa-Allah, you are all coming here, leaving your work and your duties to sit and visit with Mawlana Shaykh Nazim and that is a jihad because it’s not easy. Some people drive from far away, some travel over the seas, and all that is jihad. We hope it is included in the ten percent that Prophet (s) mentioned, “If you do ten percent of Shari`ah when time is coming to an end, you will go to Paradise.”

So when he said, “I have prepared myself, yaa Rasoolullah.” Prophet (s) asked, “For what have you prepared yourself?” He said, Ka-anee unzhur ila `Arshi Rabbee, “I felt I saw or visualized Allah’s Throne.” This is muraqabah: when you struggle with your ego and give it a hard time during the day and night, so day-after-day you come to notice you are having visions and you might have more dreams. We are receiving messages of hundreds of dreams from people and hundreds of questions on muraqabah on eShaykh.com. It is a preparation, as Anas ibn Malik (r) said, to be able to see what cannot be seen, and the confirmation of this is in the Holy Hadith of the Prophet (s):

Man `ada lee waliyan aadhantahu bi ’l-harb wa maa taqarraba ilayya `abdee bi-shayyin ahabba ilayya mimmaa aftaradtu `alayhi wa maa yazaalu `abdee yataqarabu ilayya bi’ n-nawaafil hatta uhibbah. Fa idhaa ahbaabtahu kuntu sama`uhulladhee yasma`u bihi wa basarahulladhee yubsiru bihi, wa yadahulladhee yabtishu bihaa wa rijlahullatee yamshee bihaa.

My servant does not cease to approach Me through voluntary worship until I will love him. When I love him, I will become the ears with which he hears, the eyes with which he sees, the hand with which he acts, and the legs with which he walks (and other versions include, “and the tongue with which he speaks.”). (Hadith Qudsi, Bukhari)

So, you can hear what people cannot hear and see what people cannot see. He said, “I felt as if I was seeing Allah’s Throne.” And not only that, when someone says, “I am seeing the Throne,” doesn’t it mean Allah (swt) is happy with him? Allah (swt) is happy with him, or else how would He show him the Throne? It means when you struggle with yourself Allah (swt) will be happy with you and give you what He did not give others, so He gave Harith (r) to see the Throne.

Yesterday I mentioned that Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (r) explained that he had seen Allah (swt) in a dream; we also mentioned that Abayazid al-Bistami (s) saw Allah (swt) in a dream and said to Him, “Yaa Rabbee, how can I reach You?” and we explained that. So when Allah (swt) is happy with His Servant, He will show him whatever He wants of His Beautiful Names. Ahlu ’s-Sunnah wa ’l-Jama`ah say Allah (swt) has no form so He cannot be seen, but you can feel His Presence.

And Harith (r) said, Wa ka-anee unzurhu ila Ahli ’l-Jannah wa yatazawaroon, “I was able to see the People of Paradise one by one.” This is not a simple statement; it means he was given power to see the People of Paradise, which also means he was one of those people. How can you see the People of Paradise if you are not one of them and how did all that happen? Because he made his day full of thirst and he stayed awake at night (in worship). He fulfilled one-hundred percent (of Shari`ah obligations) and we are allowed to do only ten percent! What is the ten percent? How long is the day? Let us say it’s twelve hours and if we divide it by ten, it means that there would be no problem if you wanted to eat and drink every hour if you could. We are making this an example to understand. Here “ten percent” is other than your obligations, voluntary acts, and Allah (swt) will be happy with you because you are the brothers of Prophet (s), as we have mentioned:

اشتقت لاحبابي . فقال اصحابه رضي الله عنهم : نحن يا رسول الله ؟ , قال لا انتم اصحابي أما احبابي فأناس من أُمتي يأتون في اخر الزمان يحبونني ولم يروني , اعوانكم على الخير كثير , وأعوانهم على الشر كثير

Anas bin Malik (r) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (s) said, " I wish that I could meet my brothers." The Sahaabah (r) asked, "Aren't we your brothers?" He replied, "You are my Companions, but my brothers are those who will believe in me without having seen me."

(Al-Albani graded it sahih in al-Silsilah al-Sahihah)

Anas ibn Malik (r) continued, Wa ka anee unzurhu illa Ahlil Jannah wata yazaroon, “I was able to see the People of Paradise as they were visiting and communicating with each other.” It means he was able to see the People of Paradise before and the People of Paradise even after his time, as he did not say, “I saw the People of Paradise sent before,” but he said, “I was able to see the People of Paradise, everyone in the future, present and past. And I was able to see the People of Hellfire; I saw one-by-one how they were being punished and for what they were being punished.”

And Prophet (s) described him, rajulun nawarallahu qalbih, “a person whose heart Allah (swt) made full of Heavenly Light which he can see by.” “`Arafta fa’l zam,” this is a very big meaning here; you can write a book just about these two words, but I will explain it in two words. “`Arafata” means “you knew the Reality” so continue what you are doing. May Allah (swt) keep us always with our shuyookh and keep us always with Prophet (s) and with all 124,00 awliyaullah, all of whom are under:

أَلا إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاء اللّهِ لاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ

`Alaa inna awliyaaullaahi laa khawfun `alayhim wa laa hum yahzanoon.

Behold! Verily on the friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve. (Surah Yunus, 10:62)

We love all awliyaullah and we love our Sultan, Sayyidee Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani, Sultan al-Awliya!

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.

May Allah forgive us and may Allah teach us. These teachings are being transmitted and you have to find them if you are learning, studying and understanding the reality of everything; otherwise, you might speak from your own desire. There are differences between teachings. There are teachings you have from your desires that might be blended with all kinds of worldly desires. No one can guarantee that his pipe is connected to the shaykh, and no one can say there are no holes in it. That worldly desire will come in and there is no way around that.

Whoever might be speaking, if they don’t confirm it from Holy Qur’an with different ayats or from Holy Hadith of Prophet (s), their speech might be affected. You will have a connection with the TV, but between the receiver might not be working very well, so the satellite dish will pull the signal but because your heart is not fixed, as Harith (r) said, “I woke up a mu’min, I struggled with myself, I remained thirsty during the day and stayed awake during the night,” he fixed his receiver and it was giving a true picture of Ahlu ‘l-Jannah, Ahlu ‘n-Naar and the Throne.

Is our receiver fixed? The signal can come but it will be fuzzy on the screen; you may only see dots there and they are also mute, so how are you going to get it? Then you begin to throw words right and left and we end up in nothing. We can say we may have barakah because people are sitting together, which is part of `ibaadah, sitting and listening, but information always has to be confirmed and authenticated with hadith of Prophet (s).

May Allah (swt) teach us like the qaseedah mentions, “Yaa Imaamu ‘l-Rusli, yaa sanadee!” and we are saying at the end of the suhbah, “O the Imaam of all Prophets! You are my support!” So we are looking for you, yaa Muhammad (s), to support us, and from our shuyookhs we ask for guidance to you! May Allah (swt) guide us through our shaykh, Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani (q), to Prophet (s), and may Prophet (s) guide us to Allah (swt).

Look at how humble Prophet (s) was! He was listening to Harith (r) and asked him, “How was your day when you woke up today?” Look how humble the Prophet (s) made himself by asking that! So let us be humble with each other and ask each other what we need or want. Say salaam (to each other). May Allah (swt) forgive us.

Bi hurmati 'l-habeeb, bi hurmati 'l-Fatihah.
